The Magic of Halloween
These days, Halloween is filled with costumes, parties, candy, and adorable ‘trick or treaters’ going door to door – making great fun for kids and adults alike!
The roots of Halloween or All Hallows Eve date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhaim (pronounced sow-in) which roughly translates to Summer’s End. The end of summer meant harvesting and moving livestock in preparation for Winter. It was the most popular and significant holiday in the Celtic calendar,
In 601A.D., Pope Gregory I incorporated this festival into the Christian holidays, commemorating All Hallows Eve (Eve of Saints) together with the Christian, All Saints Day.
This pagan holiday was created to honor the dead – some visiting cemeteries and creating altars offering food and drink to the spirits of the past. Bonfires were lit to honor the dead and to help light their paths on the other side.
HALLOWEEN RITUAL
To begin this ritual, prepare a meal and serve a portion of it in several dishes on an altar decorated with candles, photos and personal items of past family members. Also be sure to decorate your altar with items like pumpkins, squash, root vegetables, nuts, dark breads, dried leaves and acorns – or create a cornucopia filled with an abundance of fruit and veggies.
Next, you will need:
• Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll
• Mulled cider, wine, or mead
• Freshly baked bread
• Feast
Place your Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll on your altar. Give the doll offerings of food and drink while remembering your deceased loved one. Then sit down to your own meal and begin by the breaking of the bread. Raise your glass of wine and say out loud:
Tonight we toast Samhain (sow-in)
To the abundant harvest and summer’s end.
To the food that lies before us,
We thank you Mother Earth for all you have given.
We look forward to the coming seasons.
We know cold nights and sacred darkness await us before your return.
Then drink from your glass of wine. After you have enjoyed your meal, take glass of cider/wine/mead and approach your altar. Sprinkle several drops of wine onto the altar in honor of your past loved ones.
Prepare a bonfire outside your home or in a fireplace and light it. Enjoy its warmth while reflecting fondly on your family and friends.
Keep the Mekabre Loa Voodoo Doll in a place of honor and in sight to remind you of your appreciation. Practice gratitude daily and be thankful for all your good fortune.
